Iron or Aluminum

IRON VS ALUMINUM BALUSTERS

Many people confuse aluminum balusters for iron balusters.  Balusters that look like iron are actually made of aluminum.  The reason why iron is not used is because for outside purposes aluminum is a much better option.

Both iron and aluminum can be power coated, but if that power coating gets scratched on an iron baluster - the exposed iron will rust whereas the aluminum will not rust.  Iron is used because it can be welded together into a custom metal railing and because of its strength.  However, for a railing that combines wood and metal pickets - aluminum does not need to get welded and it is strong enough by all building codes to the best of our knowledge.  In conclusion, what you may think is an iron baluster is actually an aluminum baluster.
